Bio
Hi, my name is Sadia Munye and I am a second-year Geography student.
My piece is a song I wrote during the summer called hanging on. It is a description of how my first year of university went in the conditions of the pandemic. Although COVID-19 in itself is an emergency, I think an emergency that has been disregarded is the mental health crisis.
This is my description of how I felt as if I had lost most of my support system due to most of my childhood friends moving away to university and how I felt as though I was stuck in the same place both physically and mentally. I think it is important to consider how the pandemic has affected everyone individually and that everyone’s suffering is valid no matter how small the problem seems.
I chose a song as my piece because the one skill I did gain from being at home for so long was playing instruments such as the guitar and the piano. I have always known I was in love with music but it is the lockdown that has allowed me to explore my passion further. Considering I had a lot of time to myself, I spent that time thinking about the past and the future. I also began writing letters to people I knew I would never send, so I turned them into songs.
